A unique opportunity to see the 19th century prison with its cells and other features before the final alterations change it into student accommodation. Opened as a County gaol in 1808, it served as a Home Office archive during World War I, then as a Naval Detention Centre during World War II. It returned to becoming a local prison in 1946 serving the courts of Kent, until 2002, when its overcrowding became notorious, and it was changed to a Category C training prison, and then in 2006 to a foreign nationals prison. It closed on 31st March 2013 and was sold to Canterbury Christ Church University to provide accommodation for its North Holmes Campus students. The Krays were among some of its most infamous occupants.

Due to site conditions and Health and Safety issues, tours will be led by the Security Team and Estates Facilities personnel. It is therefore not suitable for disabled visitors or guide dogs, and no WC facilities on site but at Old Sessions House. If reasonable adjustments required please contact

Organised by: Canterbury Society/Canterbury Christ Church University.
