La Traviata is the heart-wrenching story of Violetta, who is tragically forced into forsaking all hope of personal happiness in order to protect the reputation of her lover. Giuseppi Verdi's opera is undoubtedly his most famous work: it is set to a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, which is based on La Dame aux Camélias, a play adapted from the novel by Alexandre Dumas, fils. The work was first performed at Venice's La Fenice opera house in 1853.

This performance will be given a specially arranged chamber version. The lead role of Violetta will be performed by highly-esteemed Canterbury soprano, Penelope Martin-Smith. The part of her hapless lover, Alfredo, will be interpreted by Paul Young, Director of Music at Dover College and Lay Clerk of the Cathedral Choir. His meddling father will be played by Peter Cox, formerly long-serving member of the Victoria State Opera. The performance will be accompanied at the piano by David Newsholme, the Cathedral’s Assistant Organist, together with a String Quartet.

Doors open at 7.15pm ahead of the performance which takes place at 7.30pm; champagne will be served at the interval. All proceeds will be donated to Porchlight.
